Born in St. Louis, she moved to New York City at the age of just days. In 1991 she was awarded a bachelor's degree in art in art from Barnard College. The same year, she was employed as an intern in An American Place restaurant for a year. Guarnaschelli got her first taste of food experiences while watching recipes she'd edited in her mother's cookbooks being examined at her home. After a stint with Larry Forgione in New York in France, New York and Los Angeles she also worked in Guy Savoy's La Butte Chaillot. She ultimately became the executive chef of Butter. Guarnaschelli appeared on the Food Network's Iron Chef America where she took on Cat Cora in the Farmers Market Battle of 2007. In the years since, she's appeared at the show's guest judges and took part in The Next Iron Chef Season Four in 2011, when she finished third. She also lost her final competition, the Food Network Challenge Ultimate Thanksgiving Feast. In the fourth series of The Next Iron Chef, she began working as an assistant chef for Iron chef Geoffrey Zakarian. She was the host of Food Network's The Cooking Loft With Alex Guarnaschelli in 2008. There, she teaches a small group of students on how to make classic recipes.
